Bed bugs can be a huge problem. They don't just exist in your bed; they can get into all your soft furnishings and even into your carpet. The bugs just want to find somewhere they can live where it is dark and where they can have access to the blood that they need to live. Turn Up the Heat
This doesn't necessarily mean that you need to turn up your furnace, but bed bugs don't stand up to heat well. You can't get your couches and beds in the dryer, but you can get your pillows, stuffed animals, or other small things in the dryer and run them through at least one full dryer cycle at the highest heat possible.

Another way that you can get rid of bed bugs, or at least control them to some extent, is to seal everything up. There are mattress covers that are designed to completely enclose your mattress. You zip them up with the mattress inside, and it can keep the bed bugs that are inside already from getting out. There are pillow covers that will do the same thing. You shouldn't get new pillows right now, you really should wait until you get rid of the bed bugs altogether. You can also put couch cushions, stuffed animals, or other soft things in garbage bags. Tie them up and put them somewhere safe for a couple of weeks, and that can help to deal with any bed bugs that might be in those things and will make it nearly impossible for bed bugs to get in to infest whatever you put in the bag.
